Around twelve thousand people crowded the first rally of the French far-right presidential candidate Zemmour in Paris. His enthusiastic supporters feel upset about how what they call traditional values have been lost due to Muslims and the far-left. French culture is under attack, they claim, the “most beautiful country in the world” must be saved. Followers of certain fundamentalist nationalism find in Zemmour their perfect ideologist. His discourse is full of historic revisionism, such as his defense of the Vichy regime as a protector of French Jews in World War II. *This is a version of an essay written for a Master’s course during fall 2020 session In this article, I will argue that economic crises are not only inevitable under capitalism but also necessary from the capital’s point of view. Locating the role of crises in the capitalist dynamic is a crucial element in order to avoid misleading interpretations of the nature of capital accumulation. Unemployment Insurance and Social Welfare: The Main Channels

Since the great recession one of the most discussed topics has been the unemployment insurance (UI) and its effects on the labor market outcomes.  There are two opposed points of view in the assessing of the UI regarding social welfare, namely, the authors who consider UI creates negative net effect in terms of unemployment duration and, on the other hand, the authors who believe in the positive role of this social program, even as an countercyclical component to deal with recession periods.  In this article I am going to summarise the main channels through a change in the generosity of UI modifies —both positive and negatively— some labor markets indicators.
